Katsina trains 34 local government climate officers on adaptation, mitigation strategies
The Katsina State Development Management Board has commenced a two-day capacity-building workshop on climate adaptation, mitigation, and resilience for Climate Change Desk Officers from all 34 local government areas of the state.
The training, held at Tahir Guest Palace, Katsina, is aimed at strengthening the technical and institutional capacity of local government officers to plan, coordinate, and implement climate resilience initiatives at the grassroots level.
In his opening remarks, the Executive Secretary of the Board, Mustapha Shehu, emphasized the urgent need for a grassroots-driven approach to addressing climate change in Katsina State.
He stressed that sustainable climate action must be rooted in communities and driven through continuous capacity-building, multi-sectoral engagements, policy reviews, and deliberate youth inclusion.
“Climate change is not merely an environmental issue but a development challenge that requires coordinated planning, evidence-based decisions, and active participation at the local government level,” Shehu stated.
He noted that young people must be empowered to lead the climate resilience crusade, describing them as innovators and long-term custodians of sustainable development.
The Executive Secretary explained that participants are being equipped with practical tools for climate risk assessment, vulnerability mapping, community-based adaptation frameworks, and strategies for mainstreaming climate action into local government development plans.
He added that the initiative reflects the development vision of Governor Dikko Umaru Radda, whose administration prioritizes sustainable environmental management, climate-smart agriculture, institutional capacity strengthening, youth empowerment, and evidence-based planning.
According to Shehu, the workshop demonstrates the administration’s recognition that local governments are critical drivers of climate-resilient development and that empowering frontline officers is essential for translating policy into measurable impact.
The training aligns with KSDMB’s broader mandate of building institutional capacity for effective development planning and implementation across the state.
The workshop further reinstates Katsina State’s proactive and forward-looking approach to climate governance and sustainable development.
