The national leadership of the Labour Party (LP) has charged the newly appointed 7-man caretaker committee for Cross River State to conduct congresses at the local and state levels of the party.

The charge was contained in a letter appointing a clergyman, Ogar Osim as chairman of the caretaker committee in the State.

The letter, signed by the acting national chairman, Comrade Maria Lebeke and the national secretary, Barrister Julius Abere, was dated 8 March 2021.

According to the letter, the 7-man caretaker committee is to embark on membership drive, conduct congresses and canvass alternative government policies even as they champion the cause of the voiceless in the state.

The appointment is for the first three months.

“By this appointment, you are expected to provide effective leadership for our party by ensuring it’s growth and development in terms of membership drive, providing a voice to the voiceless, canvassing alternative government policies in line with our philosophy and ideology. One of the major outcomes of this appointment is to work assiduously towards conduct of congresses…”.

Other committee members are: the deputy chairmen (north) Clement Ogar, and Odima Enagu (central) respectively while Mr Asuquo Effiong is secretary. Others are Sunday Ogar, Dr Ofem Leman, Martina Unyi Ojoja and James Effanga Archibong.

Speaking to news men in Calabar, Ogar said he has accepted the appointment and would soon formally defect from APC to Labour Party.

He added that he has consulted with his political mentors and they encouraged him to lead the party in the state as an alternative platform for the people.

“We will make LP the viable alternative the people of Cross River are yearning for.”
