Legitimacy of unofficial offices and call for sensitivity in Nigeria’s economic environment

By Sadiq Muhammed

The purchase of vehicles by the National Assembly, a constitutionally recognized and legitimately elected body, can be justified as part of their operational requirements.

However, when it comes to offices that are not constitutionally established, such as the Office of the First Lady, it becomes challenging to justify the allocation of billions of funds in an economically-strained environment.

Questions may arise regarding the legitimacy of the Office of the First Lady, as it is not an elected or constitutionally recognized position.

This situation could set a precedent for the creation of more unofficial offices, leading to a situation where various family members of high-ranking officials may also seek recognition. In times like these, all public offices, including constitutionally recognized ones, should exhibit sensitivity to the economic challenges facing the nation.

The people of Nigeria should not be taken for granted, especially when the country is already dealing with a fragile political environment.

It is crucial to avoid pushing the people to their limits, given the hardship and suffering they have endured.

It is a valid question to ask whether the current situation in the country is normal, considering the extent of suffering and economic difficulties.

Nigerians have endured enough and should voice their concerns to put an end to such practices.
