Limited resources, our major security challenges- Modibbo Adama varsity VC

The Vice Chancellor of Modibbo Adama University, Yola, Professor Ibrahim Umar, has called on Federal Government to expedite action on addressing overwhelming challenges of its limited resources.

The Vice Chancellor revealed this at the 29th 30th combined convocation of the university which took place at the Convocation Square on Saturday in Yola.

His words, “in the area of security, despite prevailing challenges, we have recorded measurable improvements through collaboration and internal interventions. However, the overwhelming security challenges in the North- East zone make it very difficult to maintain optimum security, owing to its dynamic nature and our limited resources.”

He said this is a special occasion to him and entire university community under his watch with many reasons, “It is my first time convocation ceremony as the substantive Vice Chancellor of the University since my appointment in August, 2024. It marks an important milestone in the lives of many graduands and their parents who will today admit new graduands into their families”.

The VC noted that, it was through popular call that federal government approved the the conversion of the University to a conventional one, thereby broadcasting it’s mandate  and expanding opportunities for more Nigerians to have greater to service. The decision of government was mainly on practical, academic, and national policy reasons.

That, the decision of government on practical, academic, and renewed vision urgent demand to expand the infrastructure and programmes of the university in responce to the already escalating demand a variety of academic programmes and services.

The VC therefore expressed the University’s gratitude to the Federal Government for its continued support across various sectors for education development.

He thanked Federal government who touched the life of students and staff especially with the provision of solar farm that address power challenges experienced in the past.

He reiterated that, “We are deeply grateful that the solar farm established in Modibbo Adama University has significantly addressed our long-standing power supply challenges. With this intervention, issues relating to electricity are gradually becoming a thing of the past.”

Admitting the gesture of  education sector, “we sincerely appreciate the Minister of Education for his timely intervention through the provision of computers to the University. We also extend our gratitude to the Minister of Water Resources for the provision of solar boreholes and the construction of 28,000-litre capacity overhead tanks, which have greatly improved water supply on campus”.

However, he solicited for the immediate inauguration of the solar project in the not-too-distant future.

He commended President Bola Tinubu for taking bold steps towards ensuring industrial harmony on campuses, and for facilitating equitable access to tertiary education through the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) in the country.

The Senate of the university has confirmed an honorary degree (Honoris Causa) on four distinguished Nigerians they are, National Security Adviser, Malam Nuhu Ribadu; Gov. Bassey Otu of Cross River; Gov. Orimisan Aiyedatiwa and former Governor of Zamfara, Sen. Abdulaziz Yari.
