Mr Anthony Maliki has formally assumed duty as Editor-in-Chief of Apex News Exclusive, an online publication. He founded the publication in May 2018 but largely worked from the background.
A deep professional and highly detribalised, Maliki has over 30 years media experience and has worked in many organisations like Champion Newspapers Limited where he spent 12 straight years as a pioneer editorial staff from 1988 to 2000. During these years, he was correspondent for the newspaper in Kaduna, Makurdi and Jos. He also worked with Punch Nigeria Limited in Maiduguri from 2001 to 2003 and freelanced with Insider Weekly Magazine from 2004 to 2008. He also had a stint with Nigerian Newsworld Magazine, Abuja from March to October, 2008 and joined Daily Times subsidiary 1st October where he helped in the production of its second compendium.
He later headed the editorial team that successfully completed another compendium, Since1960nigeria for the House of Representatives in 2011 that captured events of the lower legislature from 1960 to 2011.
He was editor of the rested National Accord in Abuja from 2011 to December 2012 and had a stint with Government, a weekly publication of Leadership Newspapers Group, Abuja. He also worked for seven years in various capacities at Media Trust Limited, Abuja.
Born in Kaduna on June 28, 1963, Maliki attended Our Lady’s Primary School, Kaduna from 1968-1972 and St. Theresa Boys primary School, Jos, 1972-1974. He was Government College, Kaduna between 1975 and 1979 and completed his secondary education at Government Secondary School, Bwalbwang, Gindiri, Plateau State in 1980.
He undertook a one-year journalism training at Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria (Centre for Adult Education and Extension Services, Kaduna) finishing in July, 1984. However, it was the Nigerian Institute of Journalism (NIJ), Ogba, Lagos, that Maliki had the best of journalism training, first in the three months News reporting course ending in May 1985 and later the two years professional diploma training from October- 1985-July 1987 under the tutelage of the best trainers at that time.
He earned a degree in Theatre Arts from the University of Jos in 2000 and later a Postgraduate Diploma in Journalism from the International Institute of Journalism, (IIJ), Abuja. Fresh from NIJ, Maliki worked under the Manpower programme of the defunct Gongola State at the Ministry of Information, Yola from December, 1987 – October, 1988. At the ministry, Maliki was well guided by Mr Andrawus Tarfa presently a Special Assistant to Governor Ahmadu Fintiri of Adamawa State.
While assuming duty on June 1, 2020, Maliki said the online media space needed to be handled by professionals.
