By Celestine Ihejirika, Jalingo

The Third Annual General Meeting (AGM) and Public lecture of the Nigerian Institution of Mechanical Engineers has ended with a call on members to eliminate quacks in their midst.

Delivering lectures at the events, the Guest speaker, Engr. Prof James Abu of the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Taraba State University (TSU), Jalingo, said the call has become imperative in view of the frequent building collapse across Nigeria.

The theme of the lecture “harnessing mechanical engineering for sustainable national development, governance perspective” according to the guest speaker, has brought National embarrassment to Nigerian Engineers.

He noted that, if urgent intervention was not taken to eliminate quack in the profession, Nigeria will continue to witness more disaster than the current one has experienced during the period under review.

Engr. Prof. Abu who applauded the State chapter of Nigerian Mechanical Engineers under current leadership of Engr. Dr. Joseph Abutu for unrelenting, encouraged him not to compromise in making sure that only qualified and certified engineers are licensed to practice.

He regretted that the ugly scenario had negated the noble profession, leading the government of the day to sourcing for foreign contractors to manage our construction projects in the country.

The guest speaker, therefore, encouraged students of mechanical engineering to be committed in their profession, warning that lack of seriousness on their part will spell doom to the noble profession in the near future.

In a speech delivered earlier by Dr. Joseph Abutu, the state chapter chairman of the institution noted that the gathering called for sober reflection considering the challenges faced in the profession.

Engr. Dr. Abutu also said the events will witness the inauguration of newly elected chapter executive and corporate members for induction.

He further highlighted that inauguration of new Excos of Taraba Chapter and the student chapter in the university will also take place and in addition to inducting three candidates whose application has been approved by the council.

He noted, mechanical engineering stands as the bedrock of all engineering disciplines pointing out that the latest approach will inspire new ideas, foster collaboration and reinforce the resolve to uphold the highest standard of professionalism.
