Media icon, Newswatch magazine co-founder, Yakubu Mohammed, dies at 75
A co-founder of the defunct Newswatch magazine, established in 1985, Yakubu Mohammed, is dead. He was 75 years of age.
Mohammed’s death comes less than two months after the passing of another Newswatch co-founder, Dan Agbese, who died on November 17, 2025.
The late journalist had launched his memoir, “Beyond Expectations”, on November 4, 2025.
He was reportedly battling a prolonged ailment before his death.
Alhaji Mohammed was born on April 4, 1950 and hails from Ologba in Dekina Local Government Area, Kogi State.
Mohammed had a strong academic foundation that prepared him for a distinguished career in journalism and leadership.
He was a trailblazing Nigerian journalist whose work helped define modern news reporting in the country.
At New Nigerian Newspapers, he was Associate Editor (1976–1980) and Managing Editor (1980). At National Concord, he was Deputy Editor (1980–1982) and later Editor (1982–1984).
Newswatch co-founder and Editor-in-Chief, Dele Giwa was assassinated on October 19, 1986, at his Ikeja, Lagos residence when he opened a package containing a letter bomb.
His death shocked Nigeria and drew international condemnation. Despite investigations and public inquiries, no one has been conclusively held responsible.
