Borno medical personnel including Doctors and Nurses under the auspices of Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) and National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives (NANNM) have pledged to partner with the State Government and various stakeholders to provide adequate treatment and close monitoring of COVID19 across the state.
The virus,according to the doctors band Nurses has assumed a world-wide scourge, affecting virtually every continent and that Borno State with a population of over 4 million people, with substantial numbers of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) taking refuge at designated camps calls for serious concern.
This was contained in a joint press conference addressed on Friday by the Chairmen of the two unions, Professor Aliyu Kodiya and Comrade Umar Shettima,at the Press centre in Maiduguri, the state capital.
Latest reports point to the fact that the only two suspected cases in the state have been tested negative as a result, called on the members of thepublic to practice basic hygiene including hand-washing,with soap and water, use of hand sanitizer, wearing of protective face masks, observing social distancing or stay at home to avoid contact.
The unions also urged Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) taking refuge in camps to mindful of this pandemic of corona virus because of obvious, apparent close juxtaposition of families.
The two unions used the occasion to commend Governor Babagana Umara Zulum, for constituting a high powered committee on COVID -19, chaired by his Deputy, Alhaji Usman Umar Kadafur for providing a state-of- the -art fully equipped, isolation centre as part of preparedness for the pandemic, there is more to be done to ensure that the over 4 million population did not fall victims.
The unions further called on the general public to avoid panic buying and engaging in mass purchase of consumables, as this will only worsen the anxiety and tension associated with the pandemic.
His words; ” We the Doctors and Nurses working in Borno state under the auspices of Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) and National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives (NANNM) have pledged to partner with the State Government and various stakeholders to provide adequate, prompt identification, isolation, treatment and close monitoring of cases of Corona Virus diseases, should it appears in the state.
“As you are all aware, the virus has become a world-wide scourge, affecting virtually every continent and thus, Borno State which has a population of over 4 million people, with substantial numbers of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) taking refuge at designated camps calls for serious concern.
“Consequently, we called on the general public to practice basic hygiene including hand-washing,with soap and water, use of hand sanitizer, wearing of protective face masks, observing social distancing or stay at home to avoid contact.
“We also urged Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) taking refuge in camps to mindful of this pandemic of corona virus because of obvious, apparent close juxtaposition of families.” Professor Kodiya said.
