MPOX: Cross River trains 200 community volunteers

As a way of combating the ravage of M-Pox, Cross River State Government State, the has trained 200 community volunteers on essential health strategies, including surveillance, case tracing, and risk communication.
The 200 volunteers were drawn from diverse regions of the state, including such local government areas such as Akamkpa, Akpabuyo, Ogoja, Obudu, Yala, Calabar South and Calabar Municipality.
The training is partnership with the Nigerian Red Cross Society in order to curb the menace of Mpox in the State.
Mpox cases have been reported across eight Local Government Areas (LGAs) of the state.
So far, there are 117 suspected cases and 14 confirmed M-Pox cases in the state.
The volunteers will be expected to conduct house-to-house sensitization campaigns, identify new cases, and monitor individuals who may have been in contact with infected persons.
The 200 are also tasked with providing psychological support to families affected by the disease.

Mrs. Inyang Ekpenyong Ekpo, State Epidemiologist, Mrs. Christiana A Ugbong, State Disease Surviellance and Notification Office (DSNO) were the facilitators while other officials from the ministry of health were also handy.
The State Epidemiologist said, “This local response model represents a valuable example of empowering community members to take active roles in managing public health emergencies.
“It also highlights the importance of cooperation between national organizations, local health authorities, and communities in addressing infectious disease outbreaks,” she said.
