Nasarawa Assembly directs Commission to discipline truant local government staff

Nasarawa State House of Assembly, (NSHA), has directed the State Local Government Service Commission to take disciplinary measures against erring staff across the 13 local government areas in the state.
Honourable Musa Ibrahim Abubakar, member of the House said, if such disciplinary measurers are taken it would serve as deterrent to others and would promote productivity among local government staff in the state.
The member, who is the Chairman, House committee on LG and Chieftaincy Affairs, made issued the directive when the management of Local Government Service Commission appeared before the committee on its 2023 budget performance, Wednesday in Lafia, lamenting on the growing rate of absenteeism and truancy among staff of LGAs.
The committee frown at absconment among some local government staff in the state and called for attitudinal change for optimal productivity.
He said that the oversight was to assess the budget performance of the commission.
“We are here to perform one of our constitutional duties. We are here to check your 2023 budget performance. We are here because we are partners in progress.
“We want to assure you of our support to enable the commission succeed
“We want the commission to be placed number one among MDAs in the state considering the importance of the commission, hosting the grassroots
“We want you to ensure that disciplinary measures are taken against any erring staff of the local government, ” he said
Hon Musa said that the committee would synergize with the commission to ensure that things are done properly and for the overall development of the state.
Earlier, Barrister Sani Bawa, the Chairman of the Commission said that their duties include, to promote, monitor, discipline and supervise the activities of local government areas.
He confirmed to the committee that the commission has been receiving 1 per cent allocation from Joint Account Committee (JAC).
He said that the one per cent is for training of local government staff.
The chairman, however appealed to the committee to assist the commission in addressing its challenges to include lack of prompt release of running cost, vehicles amongst others.
