Nasarawa State Governor Abdullahi Sule has appealed to youths and the organized labour in the state to shelve the planned nationwide protest in order for peace to reign.

Governor Sule made the appeal when he presided over an expanded emergency security council meeting shortly on arrival to Lafia, the state capital from his trip to China.

According to the governor and recounting his experience from his recent trips to India and then China, good things are coming to Nasarawa State but the only way the people can benefit is when they live in peace and harmony with each other.

While updating the stakeholders about recent developments, particularly the various meetings held by the state Deputy Governor, Dr. Emmanuel Akabe both within and outside the state where he represented him, Governor Sule assured that his administration is on top of the security situation regarding kidnappings and other challenges.

Regarding the various efforts at all levels of government to call for restraints regarding those planning to stage a nationwide protest, he said in Nasarawa State there is no reason whatsoever for the people to join such protest.

Governor Sule said the essence of organizing the expanded security meeting was to appeal to the people especially the youths and labour organizations not to join the planned protest.

He equally used the opportunity to appeal to the security agencies in the state on the need for tact in case some individuals insist on taking to the street in protest, urging them to be cautious not to further exercerbate the situation either by shooting at protesters or any such act that could lead to a crisis.

The governor restated his earlier commitment to pay the new minimum wage of N70, 000, but urged the organized labour in the state to reason with local government chairmen who are now on their own and who may find it difficult to implement the new wage.

He also congratulated the local government chairmen over the recent Supreme Court judgement that gave the councils full financial autonomy, adding that personally the development will not change anything because since from June 2019, the councils have been managing their finances.

The governor said regarding his recent trips to India and China, two tractor giants, Mahindra and Mahindra and Lobo have both shown interest to come to Nasarawa State to establish workshops not only for assembling but for repairing tractors.

He explained that though the trip to India was on the invitation of Mahindra, with the company paying for the entire expenses incurred during the 5-day trip, going to China was on the invitation of the Federal Government as part of the committee for the Green City Project that is also coming to Nasarawa State.

“We are beginning to see more and more interest in our state. This interest will only mean anything if we have peace. I am talking especially to our youths and our religious leaders and to our ethnic leaders who are here. There is need for us to live with one another in peace. There is need for us to benefit from anything that is coming to Nasarawa State. We can’t be fighting one another when the other people are fighting to go to the moon,” he said.

Also speaking during the event, Comrade Ismaila Ayuba Oko, Chairman, Nasarawa State Chapter of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC), assured that both the NLC and Trade Union Congress (TUC) in the state are not part of those planning to embark on a protest.

Ako emphasized that no member of the organized labour in the state will participate in the protest.

Our correspondent reports that the Deputy Governor, Dr. Emmanuel Akabe, state executive council members, LG chairmen, security chiefs in the state, traditional rulers, youth organizations, student union leaders, the labour unions, religious leaders and CSOs were all in attendance during the meeting.
