A civil society group under the aegis of Nasarawa State Transparency, Accountability, and Good Governance (NS-TA&G2) has applauded Governor Abdullahi Sule for transparency and accountability in governance.
Mr Lazarus Salaki, leader of the group gave the commendation during a press conference in Lafia.
Salaki noted that the governor’s unwavering commitment to fiscal discipline, prudent management of public resources, and inclusivity had redefined governance in Nasarawa State.
“These are qualities that should be emulated by all, especially appointees of the governor, to effectively deliver on the people’s mandate,” he said.
He, however, said that some appointees of the governor were already being distracted by the politics of 2027, which was capable of undermining the gains of the present administration in the state.
Salaki pointed out that given the governor’s commitment to good governance, he had in 2024 directed all his appointees with political ambition in 2027 to resign.
“Despite the directive some appointees including the Accountant General of the State, Musa Ahmed-Mohammed, have allegedly been involved in ‘secret’ politicking for the governorship position in 2027.
“Our concern is that given the sensitivity of the office of the AG, the governor should take a proactive step against institutional fragility.
“Even though the AG has a constitutional right to contest for election, we feel it’s too early to start politics; he should advise his supporters to allow him to concentrate on his current job,” Salaki said.
Reacting to the development, the state’s accountant general denied involvement in the politics of 2027, saying he was focused on his current duty as the AG.
“I challenge anybody to produce evidence where I am seen meeting with people to tell them that I am contesting for the governorship of Nasarawa State.
“At the moment, I am committed to the government of Gov. Abdullahi Sule and that is exactly what I am doing,” he said.
Ahmed-Mohammed, however, pointed out that as a Nigerian citizen, he had the right to vie for any elective position of his choice, but had in the meantime dedicated himself to the service of Nasarawa State.
He, therefore, urged those calling on him to contest for the governorship position in 2027, to allow him to concentrate on the task given to him by Gov Sule, to stabilise the financial sector of the state.
