Nasarawa humanitarian ministry takes proactive steps against impending floods

Nasarawa state government says it has taken a drastic measures to tackle the impending floods that might rendered some residents of the state homeless.
The Commissioner for Special Duties on Humanitarian Affairs and NGOs, Dr. Margaret Elayo disclosed this during a meeting with staff of the ministry in Lafia, the Nasarawa state capital on Thursday.
She explained that the aim of the meeting was to strategizing and preparing ahead the forecast of impending floods in the country.
The commissioner who doubles as the focal person of the Nigeria Diaspora Commission, added that she convened the meeting for a comprehensive briefing with staff of the ministry to discuss planning, as well as propose an engagement plan in anticipation of the forecasted flood-prone areas.
Her words, “The objective was to develop an adequate strategy to harness the situation, ensuring effective preparedness and response measures.”
Dr. Elayo, however, identified key aspects of the plan to include situation analysis and risk assessment, stakeholder engagement and collaboration, emergency preparedness and response protocols, as well as resource mobilization and allocation, community sensitization and awareness campaigns.
The Federal Government, through the Federal Ministry of Water Resources and Sanitation and the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA), identified 31 states, including Nasarawa State, as high-risk areas for significant flood impacts in 2024.
