National Orientation Agency, Bauchi engages stakeholders on tackling social vices, lament parental negligence

By Ude Ogbonnaya Israel, Bauchi

Negligence and poor parental roles on their children have been identified as the major reason behind the rise of drug abuse and by extension many forms of insecurity in the society.

This was the position of stakeholders at a one-day sensitisation and re-orientation programme against thuggery, kidnapping, drug addiction, radicalization and violent extremism organised on Friday by the state chapter of National orIentation Agency (NOA).

Spokesperson of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) Akinwumi Richard Olufemi said parents are obviously lagging behind in either beign a role model or monitoring their children

“We have to be role model to our Children, and also monitor them closely to know when they are going astray,
“You have a child, and all of a sudden you wil start saying O don’t know what happened to him or her, always indoors, do you know what that child of yours is doing there whether he or she is abusing drugs, we must watch them”, Olufemi said.

He added that illicit trade and consumption of psychotropics and other drugs are the major causes of the current state of insecurity bedeviling our nation.

The NDLEA Spokesperson insisted that drug abuse is like an evil tree with many branches that produces all forms of social vices including insecurity.

Representative of Comptroller General, Correctional centre Mamman Samuel Lily said no one is born a responsible citizen, but it is a process which young people should be moulded into as they grow.

Speaking to Apexnewsexclusive, President National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN) Bauchi State chapter Muawiya Haruna Jaja believed that the crime persist because children are copying what they see from the older persons

Responding state Director, National Orientation Agency NOA Nuhu Yusuf kobi said the sensitisation by the agency is just the beginning as they will continue to mobilise stakeholders at all levels to drive positive change of the ill mindset of young Nigerians embracing different vices.
