NGO engages Nasarawa Assembly on climate change policy legislation

The Global Initiative for Food Security and Ecosystem Preservation (GIFSEP), a Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) on Wednesday, presented a climate change policy document to the Nasarawa State House of Assembly for legislation.
Dr David Michael, Executive Director, GIFSEP, led a delegation of climate change advocate NGOs, Civil Society Organisations, and persons with disabilities among others to Muhammed Omadefu, Chairman, House Committee on Environment, Nasarawa State House Assembly in Lafia.
Dr Michael said GIFSEP was implementing the African Activists for Climate Justice (AACJ) project, with support from Oxfam in Nigeria in Nasarawa State in the last three years, carrying out resilience-building activities to mitigate the impact of climate change.
According to him, knowing that climate change impacts Nasarawa state greatly, GIFSEP in collaboration with the state Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources has developed a climate change document.
“Most of the international NGOs and partners that we work with,
if they want to work in a state, one of the questions they will ask is did they have a policy in that regard.
“And so we noticed that gap in Nasarawa state and we felt that the state government should have a policy on climate change. And we took a step two years ago and developed a policy.
“Two years after presenting the climate change policy document to the commissioner in the ministry of environment, nothing really happened, and we know that where policies are made to become law is here right in the Assembly,” he said.
Dr Michael commended the lawmaker’s commitment and his willingness to engage with them on climate change policy influencing to pave the way for legislation in the State House of Assembly.
Responding, Muhammed Omadefu, Chairman House Committee on Environment, assured of the necessary support to legislate on the climate change policy document.
” I want to give you the full confidence that we are going to make laws that will mitigate the impact of climate change in Nasarawa state,” he assured.
The Chairman House Committee on Environment, said the Nasarawa House of Assembly Under the leadership of the Speaker, Danladi Jatau, was yearning to make laws that would bring succour to the citizenry.
Earlier speaking, Mr Emmanuel Envoh -Okolo State Coordinator, Nasarawa State Network on Environment and Climate Justice (NASNECJ), advocating for a robust collaboration to ensure that the climate policy document pass into law.
The high point of the climate change policy influencing visit was the presentation of the climate change Champion Award to the Chairman House Committee on Environment, Nasarawa State House of Assembly, Hon. Muhammed Omadefu.
