Nigeria at 65: General IBM Haruna calls for unity in diversity

Major General Ibrahim Bata Malgwi Haruna, (rtd) has congratulated Nigeria on its 65th independence anniversary from Britain.

The elder satesman said in his independence message to the people of Nigeria in Abuja to mark the 65th independence anniversary.

According to him, “I am privileged to have lived along with Nigeria for the 65 years of our Sovereignty and I am glad to congratulate us for our growth from 60 million to 230 million in population and to have sustained social unity in diversity of over 300 ethnic Nations and variety of political objectives.

“I say congratulations and Happy Anniversary Federal Republic of Nigeria @ 65 God bless Nigeria with wisdom peace and prosperity Amen,” said General Haruna.

General Haruna was born on 24th July 1940. He holds the traditional title of Walin Garkida in Adamawa State.

He was among the first 30 recruits enrolled into the Boys Company, now known as the Nigerian Military School, Zaria in 1954.

He was a Minister for Information and Culture between 1975 and 1977.

After his retirement, he read Law at Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria.

He was also the Chairman, of Arewa Consultative Forum between 2009 to 2012.

IBM Haruna is the Life President of the Nigerian Professional Golfers Association (NPGA), the Chairman, Board of Trustees of the IBB Golf and Country Club Abuja; a member of the Board of Trustees, Ladies Golfers Association of Nigeria (LGAN), and a member of the Advisory Board of the West African Golf Tour, Abuja.

He was also given the National Honour as an Officer of the Federal Republic (OFR) in 1980 by the then President Shehu Shagari.

In September 2017, he was made the Life Patron of the Nigerian Military School (NMS) Zaria Ex-Boys Association (FCT Chapter).

He is married with children and grand-children.
