The Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC) has condoled with Nigeria’s Commonwealth Gold Medalist, Oduanyo Adekuoroye, over the death of the mother, Mrs Omotola Adekuoroye.

A statement by Mr. Tony Nezianya, NOC Publicity Secretary said Mrs Adekuoroye, aged 71, passed away on October 7, 2023, and will be laid to rest in Akure, Ondo State on December 9, 2023.

Nezianya said that the President of the Committee, Engineer Habu Gumel, expressed his heartfelt sympathies and regrets that he cannot personally attend the funeral due to prior engagements.

However, Gumel will be represented by Tony Nezianya, Public Relations Officer of the Movement in Akure.

The late Mrs Adekuoroye was a beloved mother and is survived by Oduanyo Adekuoroye, who has brought immense pride to Nigeria through outstanding achievements in sports especially Commonwealth Games and other Games including the World Wrestling Champions. Oduanyo is currently Nigeria’s medal hopeful at the upcoming 2024 Paris Olympic Games.

The NOC said they were obliged to rally around the top wrestler who would be carrying the hopes and aspirations of over 200 million Nigerians to the Paris Games.

Adekuoroye first won Gold at the 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games, a feat repeated at the Games of 2018 in Gold Coast, Australia, and the 2022 Birmingham winning Gold in medals in African Games.
