Hon. Victor Ogene, a member of the House of Representatives and Chairman of the House Committee on Renewable Energy, has called on journalists to increase scrutiny of government budgets at all levels.

Speaking at the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Anambra State Council’s triennial delegate conference in Awka, Hon. Ogene criticized the lack of transparency in many State budgets.

He highlighted that numerous State governments publish budgets lacking specific project allocations and amounts, instead relying on broad sectoral allocations.

This, he argued, hinders accountability. He urged investigative journalism to expose this opacity and hold State governments responsible.

Hon. Ogene lamented the decline in investigative journalism and stressed the importance of journalists fulfilling their role as societal watchdogs.

Separately, the conference saw the re-election of Comrade Emeka Odogwu as Chairman of the Anambra State NUJ Council, securing 170 votes against his opponent’s 40.

Comrade Odogwu thanked Governor Chukwuma Soludo and other government officials for not interfering in the election and pledged to improve the Council’s performance and members’ welfare.
