Director General of the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA), Umar Ibrahim Mohammed along with Awoibi Joe-Ukairo, Deputy Director of the Hydrogeophysics Department, recently participated in the 10th Global Environment Facility (GEF) Biennial International Waters Conference, held in Punta Del Este, Uruguay.
The event was hosted by the Government of Uruguay, the conference with the theme “Transformative Actions and Impacts for the Water and Ocean SDGs: The GEF IW Response to Global Challenges.” The event included a pre-conference workshop, followed by main conference activities featuring plenary sessions, roundtable discussions, workshops, and interactive sessions.
Highlight of the conference was the Innovation Marketplace, where partners and sponsors showcased their results and explored approaches for leveraging and replicating successful initiatives.
Participants also had the opportunity to visit technical sites relevant to international waters, enhancing their understanding of ongoing global efforts.
During the conference, NIHSA engaged directly with sponsors of the NB-ITTAS Project, discussing the impacts of the pilot demonstration project in Wammakko, Sokoto.
NIHSA sought additional funding and technical support for advancing flood forecasting initiatives, underscoring the Agency’s commitment to enhancing Nigeria’s hydrological management capabilities.

The networking sessions allowed NIHSA Director General to connect with peers who have successfully implemented hydrological projects that NIHSA aims to adopt, including the establishment of a Coastal Waters Department.
The conference proved to be a valuable platform for knowledge exchange, collaboration, and advocacy for enhanced support in hydrological projects critical to sustainable development goals.
