NUJ President commends Plateau government over remodeling work on Press Centre

NUJ President, Isiguzo, addressing newsmen after inspecting ongoing remodeling work at the NUJ Press Centre in Jos

President, Nigeria Union Journalists (NUJ), Chief Chris Isiguzo, has commended the Plateau Government over the ongoing remodeling of NUJ Press Centre, Jos.

Isiguzo, who was in Jos on Wednesday to assess the progress of work, charged journalists to embrace development journalism for the good of the society.
The NUJ President lauded the Gov. Simon Lalong for keeping his word  to remodel the centre.
“When we visited the Plateau Council of NUJ, the governor assured us that the work will commence immediately.
“True to his words, the project is up and running.
“I have gone round and I have seen that the State government wants to turn the press centre to a modern facility. This is quite encouraging and I am happy with the pace of work.
“They are transforming what they met on ground and erecting some important structures for economic benefits so that the council will be able to generate some revenue to maintain the structure when it is completed,” he said.
He urged other governors to learn from Lalong by upgrading facilities belonging to journalists instead of demolishing them as witnessed in some states.
Isiguzo added that NUJ leadership would officially communicate its feeling to Gov. Lalong when the project is completed.
Noting that much was usually expected from whom much is given, he challenged journalists in the state to reciprocate the gesture via adequate publicity of the state government’s activities.
“There should not be unnecessary negative publicity; development journalism is what we must do these days.
“We must depart from journalism of destruction just to pull down the government.”
Mr Paul Jatau, Plateau NUJ Chairman, who also spoke with the newsmen, expressed satisfaction with the quality and level of work so far.
Jatau said that the contractor had informed the Council that the project would be completed within 12 weeks.
The Chairman thanked the State government and expressed hope that the existing relationship with NUJ would continue.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), reports that the remodeled press centre would have a befitting office for the chairman and secretary, as well as a library and board room.
Others include an eatery, some shops, a parameter fence and landscaping of the centre, among others. (NAN)
