Obi, Umeh, others eulogise Onitsha Catholic Archbishop at 70th birthday celebration

Presidential candidate of Labour Party and former Governor of Anambra State, Mr Peter Obi, Senator Victor Umeh and other prominent personalities have poured encomiums on the Archbishop of Onitsha, Most Rev Dr. Valerian Okeke as he rounds off his 70th birthday anniversary.

Most people who spoke during the grand finale held at the Basilica of the Most Holy Trinity, extolled Archbishop Okeke’s qualities which have brought massive development to the Archdiocese of Onitsha during his episcopacy.

Obi said of all the achievements and revolution he brought to the Archdiocese, Bishop Shamahan University is uppermost in their heart, stressing that the people are waiting for him to deliver the university.

He said what the man of God was doing in the Archdiocese was tremendous, saying: “the good work and revolution he started here will continue to blossom”

The former Governor enjoined all to be part of the success story especially the Shanahan University.

Senator Umeh who was the chairman of the occasion said Archbishop Okeke is not only the ArchBishop of the Archdiocese but also the entire Onitsha ecclesiastical province .

He said 70 years was just the beginning of the Archbishop’s journey because there would be another celebration when he clocks 80 years and more.

Umeh said Archbishop Okeke’s life is examplinary, lauding his achievements in areas of education, prison apostolate, spiritual development of the members of the Archdiocese among others .

In his Homily, the Bishop of Abakiliki Diocese, Most Rev. Peter Chukwu highlighted the achievements of Archbishop Okeke to include hospital, school rehabilitation and development and “his unrivaled affinity with the poor”

In the address presented by the members of the Archdiocese, they said “you are indeed a testament of grace and mobility” even as they pledged continued “unflinching support and solidarity”.

Archbishop Okeke had engaged in almost one month celebration activities starting from his visit to Onitsha Correctional Centre, where he fed over 1000 inmates,commissioned Acquisition Centre he built for the Correctional Centre, visited three major hospitals in Onitsha and environs and fed over 2000 indigent persons across major religion and denominations.
