A former presidential aide to Muhammadu Buhari,  Chief Okoi Obono-Obla has strongly disagreed with ongoing calls by many Nigerians calling for one term ot six years for the executive and legislative arms of government.

In an interview, Obono-Obla  said that when an incumbent demonstrates competence and earns the trust of the people, a second term provides the necessary continuity to deepen reforms and drive meaningful progress.

“I do not support the proposal for a six-year single tenure for the President and Governors.

“Eight years cumulatively is adequate for a visionary leader to lay the foundation for transformative governance and implement lasting change.

“The existing system ensures that leadership remains accountable to the people while allowing ample time for impactful governance.”

He insisted that a truly visionary leader requires sufficient time to internalize and implement their vision for the country and their state, especially given the complexities and unique challenges confronting the nation.

He said the current system, which allows for an initial four-year term with the possibility of another four years based on performance and the electorate’s approval, is fundamentally sound.
