By Danusa Ocholi
The D-Day is here for the people of Kogi State in North Central Nigeria. It is among the states the Independent Electoral Commission(INEC) will hold an off cycle election on Saturday,November 11. A major issue that will determine the outcome of the election is the move by the outgoing governor,Yahaya Bello to foist his nephew,Alhaji Ahmed Ododo as his successor. A case of installing a puppet, while Bello will be manipulating him aft hid eight inglorious years in office.
Yahaya Bello has been notorious for engaging anti -democratic forces to win election. He has elevated thuggery display of guns and bullets to cow the electorate, to always have his way.
Reports have it that the people of the state, especially those of Kogi East who have bore the brunt of Bello s high handed, corrupt and grossly inefficient administration are not ready to vote for his puppet,Ahmed Ododo who is standing on the platform of the ruling APC.From accounts a prodigy.
Murtala Yakubu Ajaka is the new kid on the block. He is standing on the platform of the Social -Democratic Party( SDP). His party which has a white horse as it’s logo has become a house hold symbol among the people, especially voters in the state.
Murtala Ajaka’s manifesto which centres on revamping the state economy, tapping the vast mineral resources of the state, education, empowerement of women and youths, tackling poverty, among others has endeared him to the vast majority of the people of the state. His media director, Farouk Adejoh, a guru in the industry and former chairman of Olamaboro Local Government is delighted with the massive support the Kogi governorship candidate is enjoying. He said “we are hopeful that Alhaji Yakubu Murtala Ajaka will get the overwhelming support of our people in the Saturday election. I am happy with the turn out of our people to catch a glimpse at home, and to express their support in all the places we went: across the three senatorial districts of the state.”
Apart from these, Murtala Ajaka is seen by many as a dogged fighter, grassroots mobiliser and philanthropist. He is affectionately called Muri by his numerous supporters and admirers.
Although many have been expressing fears that Yahaya Bello may unleash his thugs,to cause mayhem and disrupt the polls, reports have it that the locals have set up vigilante groups to protect their votes and the process.
The Federal Government,on its part has taken adequate measures to ensure a free and fair election, and above all a credible poll.
With these measures in place a new occupant of Lugard House Lokoja is expected to emerge this Saturday. And Murtala Yakubu Ajaka is favorite to emerge the new Sheriff in town.
