Onitsha South Mayor meets market leaders to chart way forward

By Sunny A. David, Awka

The Mayor of Onitsha South Local Government Area, Hon. Chief Emeka Orji, convened a meeting with market leaders across the local government to deliberate on strategies for progress and development in the area.

The meeting, which marked the first interactive session of the year between the local government administration and market leadership, focused on the 2026 budget planning as well as other critical issues aimed at improving the welfare of residents.

Speaking after the meeting at the Local Government Secretariat Hall, the Local Government Secretary, Paul Onuachalla Esq., explained that the engagement was part of efforts to ensure inclusive governance.

“We are currently planning our budgets, and we considered it necessary to involve market leaders and other key stakeholders,” Onuachalla said. “They are an integral part of our decision making process. Some of them operate businesses here but live outside the area, and their contributions will help us govern more effectively.”

He noted that the administration also used the opportunity to highlight the mayor’s scorecard, including developmental achievements and timely interventions that helped avert potential crises. Among these achievements, he mentioned the provision and procurement of a fire service station and a fire truck for the local government.

Onuachalla disclosed that due to limited human resources within Onitsha South, the local government sought technical assistance from the Ministry of Power and Water Resources in Awka to ensure the effective operation of the fire service equipment.

“When we talk about technical assistance, we mean the deployment of fire service officers and technical personnel required to make the equipment fully operational and battle-ready,” he said.

He added that officials of the fire service from Awka were invited to test and assess the fire truck, noting that this was the first time Onitsha South Local Government was undertaking such a project.
