Academic Staff Union of
Universities (ASUU), Nasarawa State University, Keffi (NSUK) Chapter has called on Governor Abdullahi Sule of Nasarawa State to, without further delay pay the over one billion naira Earned Academic Allowances owed lecturers for over five years.

Making this call during a press conference held on the university campus, Dr. Samuel Aluu, Chairman, NSUK Chapter of ASUU said following the resolution of their congress held recently, the congress observed and resolved that the Visitor of NSUK, Governor Sule should fund the university holistically.

He frowned at the situation whereby his members are deprived of their Earned Academic Allowances amounting to over a billion naira.

He also bemoaned that multiple taxation is excessive on salaries of members, on monthly basis.

When asked about the update of salary arrears he said that the state government and the university is owing them October salaries which was not fully paid, rather his members receive net salary payment while the remnant of deductions are still hanging.

Dr. Aluu wondered why the state government is reneging on agreements reached, pointing out that the continuous illtreatment to his members may lead to another industrial dispute if not resolved.

“For more than 10 years these unresolved issues still lingers. Our demands from the State Government are proper funding of the university, payment of arrears of Earned Academic Allowances…”

Dr.Aluu explained that the lack of commitment on the part of the government and the university stakeholders to address these issues raised, made them to approach the university management, while they will also reach out to National ASUU seeking their intervention to help resolve these pertinent issues.

It would be recalled that on the 25th July 2022, he stated, the union presented to members of the public the state of affairs in NSUK. As a result of that press conference, the Executive Governor of Nasarawa State made public pronouncements that were conveyed to the union in writing by the Secretary to Nasarawa State Government. It stated that starting from August 2022, the government would take-over full payment of salaries of the University Staff as well as immediate release of 200 million naira of the over one billion naira, being owed lecturers as pay part of outstanding of EAA arrears.
