Plateau State Government has commenced the furmigaation of selected public areas within Jos, the capital city and environs in its fight against COVID-19.
This exercise will extend to all local government areas of the state even though, no case of COVID-19 has been recorded in the state, the governor, Simon Lalong disclosed while launching the exercise in Jos.
The flagging off the exercise which coincided with the Good Friday and Juma’at worships, the governor called on both Christians and Muslims to use the occasion of the special period to pray for the eradication of the disease and other vices.
According to him, since as at today, the state was yet to record any infection, “we cannot relax. We have to remain vigilant and proactive.
“During this period, the entire State will be fumigated. [All Public places such as markets, Streets, Office Premises among others will be fumigated]. I call on all our citizens to stay at home in line with the directive we have issued in order to achieve the aim of this exercise.”
The governor added that in addition to the fumigation, the seven day lockdown will also help in reducing any tendency for inter-State transfer of the disease and enable government respond appropriately to any suspected case and contact tracing.
He then appealed to all citizens to abide by the lockdown directive in order to make the work of law enforcement officers easier. “We do not want to hear of ugly cases of harsh enforcement.”
He equally assured that the government will soon roll out palliative measures to assist the weak and vulnerable in the state.
