The Nigeria Union Journalists (NUJ), Plateau State Council has commended the State Government on its zero pothole initiative which has given life to some unmotorable road within the city centre.
This call was contained in a communique issued at the end of the maiden Congress of the union by the newly constituted executive, headed by Ayuku Pwaspo in Jos, the state capital.
The union tasked the state government “to look seriously into the tourism sector” as the road rehabilitation will open ways to this sector which has remained untapped when it has a lot to offer in revenue generation among others.
The communique e-signed hy the secretary, Mary Domtur and co-signed by the drafting committe of John Farinola, Jemimah Ali and Ndeyang Andeyaba Gyang.
It also expressed concerns over the rising spate of insecurity in the Jos-Bukuru metropolis, and ” urges Plateau State Government to re-enforce the ban on commercial motorcycles and also regulate tricycle operations in the city centre”
Another issue of concerns, the Congress noted, was the “activities of petroleum marketers in the state” which she accused of deliberately creating artificial scarcity by not availing the products to motortlrists; leaving the few dispensing to jack up prices which has led to increase in transport fares among others.
The union then feel strongly that government should set up a committee to monitor the activities of petroleum marketers.and make the products affordable and at controlled price to the public.
“While commending the efforts so far in tackling insecurity in the state, Congress appealed to security agencies to maintain and sustain the tempo especially at worship centres.
“Congress urges the Plateau State Government to look into indiscriminate parking of heavy duty vehicles along major roads in the metropolis, advises government to establish articulated vehicles parks to make the streets safer for motorists. Congress believes that the such park will also serve as a source of revenue for the state. Congress further urges government to regulate illegal motor parks in the city centre.
“Congress observes with concern the construction of warehouses within residential areas. Such warehouse have not only endangered the lives of the residents because of influx of articulated vehicles but also exposes them to other hazards”, the communique stressed.
It further appealed to the government to intervene in the rising cost of cooking gas with its attendant effect on the environment as it relates to deforestation even as it worries over the resurgence of kidnappings in the state and called on security agencies to redouble efforts at curbing the menace.
