The Director of Press and Public Affairs (DOPPA) to Governor Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau State, Dr. Gyang Bere, has kicked off the 2nd edition of the Vwang District, Jos South Local Government Area, 2025/2026 Unity and Peace Football Tournament.
The opening ceremony, held on Monday at the Vwang Central Football Field, saw the defending champions of the maiden edition, Turu United, defeat last year’s runners-up, Chigwai FC, by a lone goal.
The tournament, sponsored by Dr. Bere, has been described as a viable platform aimed at engaging youths in Vwang District, discouraging social vices, and redirecting their energy toward productive ventures.
According to him, the initiative is more than a football contest but a peace-driven project designed to bring talented youths together, promote unity, discourage drug abuse, and strengthen social cohesion in the district.
Bere revealed that the tournament enjoys the endorsement of the Executive Governor of Plateau State, Barr. Caleb Mutfwang, whom he described as a visionary leader committed to reform and inclusive governance.
“Plateau has found in him a leader who listens, a reformer who acts, and a statesman who envisions a brighter future. He is fearless, focused, and rooted in the belief that a united people can achieve the extraordinary,” he said.
He praised Vwang District as a model community in security, unity, and peaceful coexistence, urging Plateau citizens to embrace peace in all their dealings and support the governor’s efforts to unite the state.
“The time is now to strengthen peace, deepen unity, and empower our youth to channel their energy into productive ventures. Football remains one of the strongest instruments of unity, capable of bringing together people from diverse ethnic and religious backgrounds,” he added.
Bere noted that last year’s edition produced promising talents who are now pursuing opportunities through the platform, assuring that this year’s tournament would be bigger, better, and more impactful.
In their goodwill messages, the Chairman of the Plateau State Football Association (PFA), Prince Suleiman Yahaya Kwande; Secretary of Jos South LGA, Da Sunday Dagwom; immediate past Registrar of Plateau State Polytechnic, Iliya Balak; Secretary of Gwom Rwei Vwang; and Chairman of the Organising Committee, Joseph Gyang, commended Dr. Bere for his continuous commitment to nurturing youth talent in Vwang District and Plateau State at large.
The 2025/2026 Vwang District Peace and Unity Football Tournament is expected to run for one month, with the grand finale scheduled for 3rd January 2026.
