The Anambra State Police Command has arrested a 26-year-old man, Anikpe Valentine Chibuike, in connection with the alleged killing of his girlfriend, Ogechukwu Mmadubugwu, a 35-year-old single mother, in Ekwulobia, Aguata Local Government Area of the State.
According to a statement issued on Sunday in Awka by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the suspect was apprehended by operatives of the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) on January 7, 2026.
The Police dismissed reports suggesting that the murder was carried out by individuals to whom the suspect owed money, describing such claims as false and misleading.
During interrogation, Chibuike reportedly confessed to stabbing the victim in the neck with a knife, an act that resulted in her death. The incident was said to have occurred around midnight on December 9, 2025.
Police sources revealed that the suspect claimed the attack was triggered by suspicions of infidelity. He further admitted that after suffering financial setbacks while trying to establish a business for the deceased, he became deeply distressed, which allegedly led to the fatal confrontation.
Investigators also disclosed that the suspect confessed to planting a fake letter alleging that he had been kidnapped by creditors, in an attempt to divert attention and evade arrest.
As part of ongoing investigations, detectives have visited the mortuary where the victim’s body was deposited. The police noted that the incident has sparked public outrage and renewed discussions on domestic violence and relationship-related crimes within the community.
The command urged residents to seek lawful and peaceful ways of resolving disputes and encouraged the public to report early signs of domestic violence to security agencies to prevent similar tragedies.
Police confirmed that the suspect will be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations.
