Police bust gang of rapists in Calabar

Police operatives from the Zone Six Command of Nigeria Police Force have busted a gang of rapists in Calabar, capital of Cross River State.
The Assistant Inspector General of Police, of the zone, Jonathan Towuru confirmed this in a statement signed on his behalf by SP Nelson Okpabi, zonal PRO.
The statement said that a team officers attached to the Zonal X-Squad acting on a petition referred to the unit, swung into action and busted a six man.
He said the rape gang operated in Ikot Efanga and its Calabar environs.
“During the operation, the team apprehended Nsa Bassey Ekpenyong ‘m’ 23 years of No. 27 Edet Eyo Street, Ikot Efanga, Calabar and Inyene Emmanuel Okon ‘m’ 21 years old residing at No. 20 Old Odukpani road, Calabar.
“They conspired with other gang members (now at large) on the 25th April, 2024 at about 1400hours, hoodwinked two teenagers (names withheld) aged 14 and 16 years respectively, under the guise of sending them to buy mango but ended up threatening them with a knife.”
He explained that the suspects dragged the victims into late Ita Friday’s Compound at Ikot Effanga, Calabar where nobody resides and forcefully took turns in having unlawful carnal knowledge of their victims.
On interrogation, the suspects confessed to have committed the heinous crime and blamed it on the devil.
Okpabi said discreet investigation into the case is ongoing, adding that the victims have been examined by medical experts.
He disclosed that the suspects will be arraigned in court at the end of investigation, in accordance with extant laws.
The Police authorities have cautioned parents, caregivers and guardians to be wary of the whereabouts of their proteges and the friends they keep, saying they should avoid falling prey to paedophiles and social deviants.
They also enjoined citizens to report all cases of molestation, harassment, sexual and gender-based violence to the Police for necessary action.
