Police debunk reports on alleged bank robbery in Anambra

The Anambra State Police Commander has faulted reports making the rounds that there was a bank robbery in the State on 15th April, 2021 as contained in some sections of the media.
According to a press statement released by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Ikenga Tochukwu, there was no such incident in any bank on the said day.
He said that the Police received a distress call on sporadic shootings near a local market and close to First Bank branch in Ogbunike, Oyi Local Government Area of the State.
The statement reads, “There was no attack in any Bank on 15th April, 2021 in Anambra State. To set the records straight, Anambra State Police Command at about 3pm, on mentioned date above, received a distress call on shootings close to Oye Olisa Market and First Bank, Ogbunike, Oyi LGA.
“Police Operatives quickly mobilized to the scene. The hoodlums, who had set two vehicles ablaze on sighting the responding Police Teams, fled the scene shooting indiscriminately.
“Unfortunately, stray bullet from the hoodlums hit two students on transit. They were rushed to the hospital and later confirmed dead by a medical doctor. Meanwhile, Police Operatives are on their trail and efforts are being intensified to get them apprehended.
“The Commissioner of Police, CP Monday Bala Kuryas, while commiserating with the families of the deceased, assures the public that the command under his watch will leave no stone unturned until the perpetrators of this heinous act are brought to book.”
