Executive Chairperson of Bauchi State Orphans and Vulnerable Children Agency (BASOVCA) Hajiya Yalwa Abubakar Tafawa Balewa has lamented that politicization of affairs had almost crippled the administration of the agency making it to derail from its original mandate.
She lamented further that rather concentrate on the welfare of orphans and vulnerable children in the society, the Agency before her coming was busy with contracts awarding and other issues that were not of importance to its mandate.
Yalwa Tafawa Balewa who was speaking to Journalists in her office on the activities of the Agency however said that, “since my coming, I have tried to study the relevant laws that established it in order to be familiar with the mandates”.
She added that, “We are gradually reverting to the established mandate of taking care of the orphans and vulnerable children in the society. We are ensuring that this category of people got the needed attention for their well being”.
The BASOVCA EC said that the major challenge of the Agency is paucity of funds saying that the orphans and vulnerable children need special attention which will be impossible without adequate funding.
Though she commended the state government for funding the activities of the Agency, she regretted that it is not enough to take care of the daily running of the affairs of the Agency.
She therefore solicited for the support of wealthy individuals and organizations in the state to support the Agency by donating generously to its purse just as is being done by a Saudi Arabia based international donor agency.
She said that, “I have visited the headquarters of the organization in Kaduna and they have promised to come visit us to see what we are doing in order to know what to do for us”.
According to her, the Agency in the educational sector, has established schools from the basic to the secondary school level after which the Agency will set up the children by handing them over to the scholarship board for sponsorship to further education.
Also, the children are taught different skills and vocation including knitting, sawing, and others after which they are supported with starting up funds and kits.
Yalwa Tafawa Balewa then assured that the Agency will stick to the mandate of taking care of orphans and vulnerable children across the state which is the primary reason for its establishment by the Isa Yuguda led administration in 2012.
