Pope Francis warned against unchecked AI development at the World Economic Forum in Davos, emphasizing that artificial intelligence, and technology in general, must serve humanity, not the other way around.
In a message delivered by Cardinal Peter Turkson, the Pope stated that technological advancements exacerbating inequality or spreading misinformation are not true progress.
He highlighted the ethical concerns surrounding AI’s autonomous decision-making capabilities, particularly in critical areas like warfare and healthcare, emphasizing the need for human control and oversight.
While acknowledging AI’s potential benefits, the Pope stressed that it is a tool created by humans and should be used responsibly to promote human dignity and fraternity, not subordinate them to efficiency or economic gain.
He urged that AI development must prioritize justice, global fraternity, and a more humane society, aligning with the principles of the Second Vatican Council.
The Pope’s message underscores the Church’s support for responsible technological development, while cautioning against prioritizing technological advancement over human values.
