Pope Francis urges media to promote hope, solidarity in a world of fear, despair
By Sunny A. David, Awka
In his message for the 59th World Day of Social Communications, Pope Francis called on media practitioners to counter fear, despair, and polarization with messages of hope and solidarity.
He emphasized that communication has the power to build or destroy, and it is up to media professionals to promote hope, understanding, and peaceful coexistence.
The Pope noted that communication often generates fear, prejudice, and hatred, but urged media practitioners not to surrender to this mindset.
Instead, he encouraged them to be “communicators of hope,” sharing stories of goodness, solidarity, and compassion.
Pope Francis also stressed the importance of gentle and respectful communication, citing Jesus Christ as an example.
He emphasized that good communication involves engaging and drawing people in, rather than driving them away.
The Pope’s message coincides with the theme of the 2025 World Communication Day, “Share with gentleness the hope that is in your hearts.”
He encouraged media practitioners to “disarm” communication by promoting a more hopeful and gentle approach, particularly in the face of online hostility and polarization.
