Pope Leo prays for victims of Benue massacre

Pope Francis offered prayers for the victims of a brutal massacre in Nigeria’s Benue State during his Sunday Angelus address.
The attack, which occurred on June 13-14 in Yelwata, resulted in the deaths of approximately 200 people, many of whom were internally displaced persons sheltering at a local Catholic mission.
The Pope called for security, justice, and peace in Nigeria, expressing particular concern for the Christian communities in Benue State repeatedly targeted by violence.
His prayers followed a statement by Amnesty International Nigeria urging Nigerian authorities to end the ongoing bloodshed and prosecute those responsible for the killings.
Responding to the attack, Amnesty International Nigeria on Saturday called on Nigerian authorities to “immediately end the almost daily bloodshed in Benue State and bring the actual perpetrators to justice”.
