Newly elected Pope Leo XIV made his first trip outside the Vatican on Saturday, visiting the Shrine of the Mother of Good Counsel in Genazzano before returning to Rome.
Hundreds of cheering faithful greeted the Pope, who traveled in a Volkswagen multivan and expressed his deep desire to visit the shrine early in his papacy.
He prayed privately before the ancient image of the Virgin Mary, reciting a prayer by St. John Paul II and addressing the assembled crowd, reiterating his trust in the Mother of Good Counsel.
Later that evening, Pope Leo XIV visited the Basilica of St. Mary Major, where he prayed at the tomb of his predecessor, Pope Francis, and before the icon of Mary Salus Populi Romani.
This was not his first visit to Pope Francis’s tomb; he had previously prayed there on Divine Mercy Sunday.
