The Anambra State Police Command has announced the arrest of the prime suspect in the gruesome beheading of a 69-year-old woman in Umuleri, Anambra East Local Government Area, which occurred in 2024.
In a press release signed by SP Tochukwu Ikenga, Police Public Relations Officer Anambra State Police Command, Awka, according to preliminary investigations, the murder was linked to a land dispute at Ogwu Nzu.
It was discovered that after the victim testified in support of one of the parties in the ownership tussle, the suspect allegedly murdered and beheaded her.
The suspect is further accused of using the victim’s head for ritual purposes in an attempt to spiritually secure the disputed land.
In a related development, two additional suspects identified as Mr. Joseph Udezuo (alias Boss) and Chukwuemeka Nworah (alias Odumodu) have been apprehended by local security operatives.
They are currently awaiting formal handover to the Police for further investigation and possible prosecution.
The Commissioner of Police, Anambra State, CP Ikioye Orutugu, strongly condemned the heinous crime, describing it as senseless and barbaric.
He expressed gratitude to the Nigerian Military and local security stakeholders, particularly the Chairman of Anambra East Local Government Area, Hon. Sir Chinweze Ifeanyichukwu, whose collaboration and timely intelligence played a key role in the success of the operation.
The Commissioner emphasized that land disputes are civil matters and urged citizens to rely on lawful means such as court proceedings rather than taking the law into their own hands and warned that resorting to violence only results in unnecessary loss of life and property.
CP Orutugu reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to protecting lives and property across the State and also called on residents to continue supporting law enforcement agencies with credible and timely information.
