As protest rocks parts of Jos, Plateau state over the sacking of some national Assembly members by the court of appeal, the League of Former Student Union Leaders has call for calm among the people.
The sacked lawmakers of the Peoples Democratic Party, (PDP), by the appeal court, was seen as bais since the affected persons are deemed to have won their elections based on popular choices.
The placard carrying youths maintained that there is “No room for political manipulation; let us protect our heritage; do not end our democracy; Plateau for PDP; our voices must be heard; Mr. President cautions the judiciary; and our land needs peace, among others.”
Reading a letter titled “An urgent need to salvage the judiciary from plunging into the arena of politics with total disregard for judicial precedents and stare decisis,” addressed to the National Judiciary Council (NJC), the chairman of Plateau Concerned Stakeholders, Yakubu Ibrahim, said the conflicting judgments by both the Tribunal and Court of Appeal depicted total disregard for the rule of law and tenets of democracy.
Yakubu called on the chairman of the NJC to constitute a commission inquiry into the nature of the failure of the Court of Appeal to follow judicial precedents.
The Appeal Court judgment sacked six federal lawmakers including a senator that sacked six National Assembly members of were People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in the State.
However, in a swift response to the protest, the former student leadership urged the citizens to accept Appeal Court Judgements and work towards building a peaceful state in line with the Motto of the state, which is Home of Peace and Tourism .
Addressing journalists in Jos, the Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the group Comrade Joseph Ladet, advised that “Our state has a long standing tradition of Peaceful coexistence and harmonious inter ethnic relationships” must be sustained for a progress and development.
‘Our state witnessed a battle among Political gladiators that is unlike any other in recent history ,We must commend our people for displaying high fate in the electoral processes and especially in the concept of the nationhood of our Country Nigeria.”
The All Progressives Congress (APC) , Labour party, the Peoples Redemption Party and even the ruling People’s Democratic Party PDP, are challenging election results here and there ,it has become pertinent to address these issues .
“The Courts must be seen to strengthen her principle of precedence ,as no one can intimidate the Court.”
