Psychiatric hospital advocates partnerships to build homes for discharged mental patients

The management of the Federal Neuro-Psychiatric hospital Calabar has called for partnerships with private organisations and religious groups to enable them build homes for discharged patients.

Managing Director of he facility, Dr Joseph Edet made the call when Cross River State Bishops’ Forum of Brotherhood of the Cross and Star visited the inmates with foodstuffs, toilet rolls, detergents, toiletries, jars of milk and cash.

Edet suggested , “We could partner to build home for the less privileged in the society, mostly the patients who have been healed in the psychiatrist hospital but have been denied and rejected by their immediate families.”

He expressed happiness for the food items from the Bishops, describing the donations as a good gesture that will help them much.

He disclosed that there are 22 long staying patients who are being fed by other patients in the hospital and the hospital management.

He stated that the hospital has a population of patients that is most vulnerable in the society.

Praying for a sustained relationship, Edet called for regular interface to enable them assist the patients.

Edet prayed for more public supports to the hospital.

Leader of the team, Archbishop Alex Ukam said they too were touched by the plight of the inmates, adding that the scriptures enjoined all to be of immense assistance to the less privileged, including the afflicted and hospital inmates.

He prayed God to enable them call at he hospital more often.

The hospital was established in 1903 and was the first of it’s kind in Nigeria and Africa at large.
