Radio callers call for sealing off of Lafarge if they fail to return headquarters to Calabar

By Akpan David, Calabar

Cross River residents, radio callers and public analysts have canvassed the sealing off of cement plants of Lafarge Holcim Africa plc.

The analysts over a private radio station in Calabar said the House of Assembly should give them 90 days to begin to make moves to return to the state.

“If they ignored the government’s directive the firm should be sealed off as a warning sign”, Barrister George Oho, a retired police officer  said.

They have called on Governor Bassey Otu and the state House of Assembly to impress on the firm to return their headquarters to Calabar, the state capital.

The governor commissioned a 20km evacuation road constructed by the firm since 2010.

While commending the firm for the new road which they say will divert endless cement trucks and other heavy vehicles from state roads, some of the angry callers said it was injustice for the firm to have its headquarters in Lagos State whereas 95% of all their raw materials, including limestone, are derived from Akamkpa Local Government Area of the state.

Another public commentator, Chief Gerald Effiom said, “They have no reason at all to continue to situate their headquarters in Lagos.  If it is for crime, the rate has now significantly reduced. Thanks to government proactive investments in that area.  Gov Otu should compel the firm’s headquarters to return to the state.”
