Red Cross decries use of logo for criminal intent

By Akpan David, Calabar

People with questionable characters are alleged to be using the logo of the Nigerian Red Cross to perpetuate criminal activities.

Decrying the alleged abuse of the logo, the first aid and pre-hospital care field officer of International Committee of the Red Cross, Mr Omoruyi Daniel Edobor said such has further endangered lives of survivors of conflicts or other emergencies in Nigeria.

Speaking in Calabar at the training of 25 journalists drawn from different media outlets in the country, he said that many unsuspecting accident survivors have fallen prey to the deceits of these persons.

He said unauthorised individuals are not supposed to adorn their logo.

“This is because we attempt to maintain our integrity during efforts to offer first aid to victims of emergencies.  Such efforts make people and survivors  feel relaxed with us.

“So for any unauthorised persons to adorn our logo into emergency scenes or social events is an abuse and make people susceptible to fake persons.”

According to him, criminals allegedly use their logo as cover up in order to escape arrests.

He advised that their paraphernalia, whether it is the vest or any of the logos should not be wrongly used, so that in events of any emergencies or conflicts, survivors can be protected and easily helped.
