Reverend David Collins Agbong, Minister in Charge of the Presbyterian Church of Nigeria, Bauchi Mission, has admonished journalists to be peace ambassadors through their reportage.

He made the remarks at Sunday sermon to mark the 60th anniversary of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), where he urged journalists to uphold truth and use their reports to calm tense situations.

“As mouthpieces of the people, sports writers should use sports reportage as a tool to unite our diverse society,” he said. “I urge you to give your readers and viewers hope even in difficult times. The media has been consistent in promoting peace, and I encourage you to sustain that through sports,” he said.

Drawing his message from the Book of Numbers, the cleric likened journalists to the twelve spies sent by Moses, noting that only two returned with an accurate report. He therefore urged them to emulate the two by always putting the truth first in their reports.

He also cited Deuteronomy Chapter One, praying for God’s protection over sports writers as they go about their duties, and remembered those who lost their lives in the line of duty.

“I pray that God watches over all SWAN members who will be traveling far and wide to participate in this 60th anniversary celebration. May your celebrations be successful,” he said.

Speaking at the service, Chairman of SWAN Bauchi State Chapter, Bala Bawaji, said the thanksgiving service was being held simultaneously across the state to seek God’s blessings for the success of the anniversary.

He expressed appreciation to the church for supporting the association and joining in commemorating SWAN at 60.
