The streets of Surulere echoed with the pounding of feet and cheers of encouragement as the Rotary Club of Surulere South successfully launched its inaugural Annual Mini Marathon.

The event, a vibrant 10-kilometer road race concluding at the iconic Teslim Balogun Stadium, was held under the powerful banner of “Running Against Drug Abuse, Racing for Literacy.”

Hundreds of enthusiastic participants, from seasoned athletes to youths, community advocates and families, gathered to run at dawn on the 29th of November.

The marathon was conceived not merely as a sporting challenge but as a dynamic platform to address two critical societal issues aligned with Rotary International’s focus areas: peace and conflict resolution through substance abuse prevention, and basic education and literacy.

“Today, every stride taken is a step away from the scourge of drug abuse and a leap towards an enlightened, literate society,” declared Faiq Abou President of the Rotary Club of Surulere South, in his opening address. “We run to build a healthier, more peaceful, and knowledgeable community.”

The competitive spirit soared as runners tackled the 10km route, weaving through Surulere’s landmarks.

The climax at the Teslim Balogun Stadium was electric, where a ceremonial prize-giving honoured the top performers.

The first four male and female finishers were awarded cash prizes and medals, recognising their athletic excellence.

In a poignant reflection of the event’s inclusive community spirit, all participants who completed the race were celebrated. Each received a commemorative medal and a certificate of participation, symbolising their personal achievement and contribution to the cause.

Proceeds from the marathon’s fundraising activities are earmarked for the club’s community intervention projects. These include literacy programs for underserved children and youths, advocacy campaigns in local schools and neighbourhoods about the dangers of substance abuse.

“The turnout and energy has been overwhelming,” noted Elohor Abhulimen the Marathon Committee Chairperson. “This medal isn’t just for running; it’s a token for joining a movement. The real victory is the awareness raised and the funds we’ve generated to make a tangible difference.”

The Rotary Club of Surulere South extends its gratitude to all participants, volunteers, sponsors- Amstel Malta and Pocari, and community partners who made the inaugural mini marathon a resounding success.

The club announces its intention to establish the event as an annual highlight in Surulere’s community calendar, promising an even larger impact in the years to come.
