The historic town of Obosi, in Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State, came alive with colour, culture, and jubilation as Igwe Chidubem Iweka, Eze Iweka III of Obosi, marked the 14th edition of the Obiora/Iwaji (New Yam) Festival.

The celebration, which took place on Saturday, October 25, 2025, at the Obosi Township Stadium, attracted a large gathering of indigenes, dignitaries, and traditional rulers from across Nigeria. Among the guests was Governor Charles Soludo, who was honoured with the prestigious chieftaincy title “Oluatuegwu I of Obosi”, meaning “the Governor who does not fear work.”

In his address, Governor Soludo commended Igwe Iweka and other Monarchs in Anambra for their roles in preserving and promoting Igbo culture. He emphasized that cultural heritage remains vital to community identity and unity, pledging that his administration would continue to foster a cultural renaissance across the State.

The Governor also used the occasion to reaffirm his administration’s commitment to the development of Anambra, urging citizens to support his re-election bid in the forthcoming November 8 governorship poll.

In his royal speech, Igwe Iweka III, who also serves as Chairman of the Anambra State Traditional Rulers Council, described the Obiora/Iwaji festival as a time of gratitude, peace, and agricultural celebration. He explained that the yam harvest season in Obosi symbolizes renewal and communal joy, and that the festival also serves as a platform for reconciliation and peace building.

“Our ancestors decreed that anyone who engages in conflict during the Obiora week must pay a heavy fine. It is a sacred time for peace and thanksgiving,” the monarch declared, urging his people to uphold unity and harmony throughout the year.

Igwe Iweka praised Governor Soludo for his progressive leadership, particularly in the areas of education, rural development, agriculture, and youth empowerment, especially through the “One Youth, Two Skills” initiative.

Chairman of the 2025 Obiora Obosi Organizing Committee, Chief Ken Ifeatu Obi, expressed appreciation to all sponsors, volunteers, and community members whose efforts contributed to the success of the festival. He highlighted the importance of unity and youth participation in preserving Obosi’s cultural legacy.

Other speakers, including Chief Engr. Emeka Molokwu (Ogbadike) and Chief Linus Mgbakogu, encouraged the younger generation to embrace their heritage and resist the erosion of traditional values by modern influences.

The grand event was graced by distinguished personalities such as Mr Peter Obi, the 2023 Labour Party Presidential Candidate; the Sultan of Sokoto; and the Ooni of Ife, among others—underscoring the festival’s national significance and Obosi’s enduring cultural prestige.
