Safeguarding, improvement of public health, wellbeing main priorities of BASEPA – DG stresses

It has been stressed that safeguarding as well as the improvement of the health and wellbeing of the general public are the main priorities of the Bauchi State Environmental Protection Agency (BASEPA).
The disclosure was made on Saturday by the Director General of the Agency Dr Ibrahim Kabir during an interactive meeting with the registered and licensed Environmental Health Officers of the Agency on the proposed special community inspection in Bauchi metropolis as part of the mitigation measures to curtail the possible outbreak of cholerae in the State.
According to him, the house to house inspection (Duba Gari) is part of the Agency’s responsibilities and is very significant in safeguarding the health and well-being of the general public calling on the officers to ensure full participation in the exercise.
While commending the Desk Officer inspection, for coming up with the initiative, he also pledged to provide the unit, all the necessary logistics to achieve the target objectives frowning not to accept any form of absenteeism, which he said, those found wanting will be dealt with accordingly.
The Director General also charged them to ensure proper records keeping of their activities, which will help in appraising the performances of the unit, making good presentation and also help in planning the activities of the unit and the Agency as well.
The special exercise is part of the mitigation measures taken by the Agency towards cholerae outbreak, especially in communities considered as hotspots.
The exercise was designed to cover all the communities of Bauchi local government in the next five months, targeting about seven thousand five hundred Households.
In his contribution, the Director, Inspection, Enforcement and Compliance of the Agency, Sanitarian Mohammed Usman Sale called on the officers to be serious, mindful and exhibit professionalism while carrying out their assigned responsibilities.
He also said that the exercise is an avenue for the officers to bring back the about to lost glory of the profession, that was hitherto consider as a very important in our communities.
The Desk Officer, inspection of the Agency, Sanitarian Haruna Suleiman also assured the Director General of the preparedness and commitments of his team for the smooth conduct of the exercise and requested for additional supports to the unit for the overall success of the exercise.
Other measures taken by the Agency to curtail the outbreak of cholerae in the state include, regular waste evacuation, drainages desilting to allow free flow of water and to avoid flooding and the banned of open defecation in public places and provision of public conveniences in Markets, Motor parks among others.
