The Social Democratic Party (SDP) Presidential candidate in 2023 general elections, Prince Adewole Adebayo, has advised Christians to be more spiritual and fully involved in 2023 polls, in order to bring the much transformation and good leadership the nation is yearning for.
Speaking at the 5-day event organized by Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion) for the Standing Committee Meeting, under the leadership of His Grace, the Most Reverend Henry C. Ndukuba; Archbishop, Metropolitan & Primate, Church of Nigeria in Abuja with the theme, “Your kingdom come, your will be done.”
Prince Adewole asked Christians to bring the value of godliness, sanity and spirituality which has been the hallmark of the church in choosing their president in 2023.
The Ondo-born prince added that, the church should not pick their leader base on physical size, bias or personal interest rather, it should be on spiritual direction in order to bring the much needed transformation Nigerians are yearning for.
He said, “For us as Christians, though politics is secular but whatever we do, is spiritual. Just like Jacob wrestles with the angel of God before he could get his destiny. Also, in our generation, we need to wrestle with the devil in order for us to attain victory in whatever we do.
“Therefore, the church must take good foundation in participating in institutions’ building. That was why Christians founded schools so that Christian values should be extended to young ones through the school systems. I was very happy when one of the speakers mentioned the motto of an Anglican church which says, “Towards the perfect man.”

“As a young boy growing up in Anglican church, as at then, I was around 11 years, I asked my grandmother a question that, “does that mean we are going to be perfect one day? My late uncle who was an Archbishop then who was with us said, “no, we are not going to be perfect but we need to continually set our eyes on the Lord Jesus Christ, and be guided by what He (Jesus) does, His principles then, every day, we continue to get better and brighter like our Lord Jesus Christ.”
“I plead with the church to be more spiritual and not to engage in 2023 polls just like the people in the flesh, rather, we should be more committed and spiritual in handling all that relates to politics with uttermost sincerity of mind by not joining others in predicting the outcome of the elections base on size, physical appearance or emotion.
Prince Adewole added that, “There was a time the Israelites were facing a serious leadership crisis; they had Saul but he (Saul) was rejected by God and they were in search for a new king. When God sent Samuel to anoint King David, David was the youngest. As a matter of fact, David was not around, he was busy in the bush taking care of sheep.

“When Samuel saw the physical size of his elder brother, he said, ‘this was the one’ but the Lord said no. He went to the next one, but was also rejected. Samuel now asked if that was all the children, but he was told there was still another young man which, of course, was the youngest and was in the bush taking care of the sheep. Samuel asked them to call him and that was how David was anointed as the king.
“So, I plead with the church not to use physical size in electing their leader in 2023 but to be guided by God and Holy Spirit in choosing the leader that will take Nigeria out of her current woes caused by bad leadership.
Other speakers at the event are 2023 Labour Party Presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, former minister of Information and PDP chieftain, Professor Jerry Gana, among others.
