The presidential candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Prince Adewole Adebayo has sponsored his supporters and party officials to carry out environmental cleaning exercise in some streets and markets in Calabar.

Since early this year, the state capital, Calabar, has been inundated with mountains of wastes, threatening health of residents and provoking stakeholders.

The SDP supporters held the sanitation exercise weekend at the popular Marian market in the heart of Calabar Municipality as well as adjoining streets which were taken over by refuse.

Cross River Southern Senatorial candidate and state Secretary of SDP, Newton Edet, led the party sanitation brigade, which saw them destiling gutters and moving wastes to dumpsites.

Speaking to journalists, Newton who represented Adebayo said, “It’s very pitiful that the aesthetic, cleanliness and ambience of the state have been allowed to completely degenerate, so that we now have mountains of wastes left all over major streets, markets and public places for upwards of two or three months uncleared.

“This is because of the bad leadership of both PDP and APC that have mismanaged this state.

“This is why we, the entire SDP faithful and lovers have come out today to carry out this sanitation exeecise to show our unflinching support for Prince Adewole Adebayo our Presidential candidate and our dear State CRS.”

Also speaking, the House of Assembly candidate for Odukpani constituency and social organising secretary, Oku Eyo Oku added that the cleaning exercise is symbolic because their party has the transformation agenda to salvage Nigeria and Cross River in particular.

According to him, their party is the platform for good governance and social justice.
