Struggle for water knows no age
By Yakubu Ahmed-BK
I parked my car some 20 meters to the well from which they draw water. The moment I alighted, they stood still, looking suspiciously at nothing but me. When I took a step towards them, they ran asunder, leaving behind the donkeys and the water containers by the side of the well.
I was coming from Zazzagawa village in Argungu Local Government Area of Kebbi State where I had gone on a condolence visit when I sighted them by the side of dusty dry road, struggling to fetch water. I looked far off, into the bush, on both sides and hadn’t seen a settlement. It dawn on me that they came from afar.
I suspected that the continuous smile on my face disarmed them and they stopped in their tracks, looked further at my face and realised, perhaps, that I meant no harm. They returned to draw water and they joined me in laughing at their apparent foolhardiness.
The under-aged Fulani girls looked quite happy and oblivious of the difficulties life has thrown at them… and careless about their right to good governance.
We spoke a little while I snapped away. Something to chew as I bumped on, back home.
