The National Body of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) has awarded Gov. Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State as Distinguished Governor, Sports Development for his outstanding performance, and contributions towards development of sports in Bauchi State and Nigeria as a whole.
The award was presented during the association’s 60th Anniversary Diamond Jubilee celebration held at the VIP Lounge of the Moshood Abiola National Stadium, Abuja recently.
Receiving the award on behalf of the governor, the Commissioner of Information and Communication, Usman Shehu Usman, described the recognition as a reflection of the administration’s dedication to rejuvenating the sports sector.
He highlighted major achievements under Governor Mohammed’s leadership, including the revival of the long-dormant State Sports Festival, the promotion of Wikki Tourists FC to the Nigeria Premier League, and enhanced support for athletes to participate in inter state, zonal, national and international tournaments.
According to him, the Bauchi State Government views sports as a powerful tool for youth empowerment, talent discovery, and social development.
In his goodwill message, Governor Mohammed expressed appreciation to SWAN for the honour and congratulated the association on its 60th anniversary.
He praised SWAN for its enduring role in promoting sports journalism, fostering national unity, and shaping public awareness through responsible reporting.
SWAN National President, Isaiah Benjamin, lauded the governor’s commitment to sports advancement and reaffirmed the association’s resolve to uphold ethical standards, embrace innovation, and strengthen collaboration with stakeholders.
The event, themed “The Power of Sports Media: Honouring Its Legacy, Shaping the Future,” highlighted six decades of SWAN’s invaluable contributions to sports growth and journalism in Nigeria.
