Taraba State Government has concluded plans to massively vaccinate livestock in some parts of the state.
Commissioner of Agriculture and Food Security, Professor Nicholas Namessan Oliver disclosed this during an interview with Apex News Exclusive in Jalingo.
Represented by the Director of Veterinary Services, Doctor Francis Rabiu Nathan, the Commissioner said the exercise would be carried out in Sardauna, Takum, Gashaka and Kurmi local government areas.
He opined that veterinary officers have carried out the first phase of the vaccination exercise which was the treatment of livestock with antibiotics for them to be vaccinated after fourteen days.
The Commissioner disclosed that there is a suspected case of another cattle disease contagious Bovine Pleuropneumonia, a highly infectious pneumonia that affects livestock.
The Director opined that they have sent samples of the animals to the National Veterinary Research Institute in Vom, Plateau State who have confirmed the outbreak of haemoragic septicemia in some parts of Sardauna Local Government Area.
He stated that in the interim there is a ban on the movement of cattle to and from the Mambilla Plateau to contain the spread of the disease.
He called on the public not to panic and maintained the resolve of veterinary officers to their best to stop the spread of the disease.
He thanked Governor Agbu Kefas for his quick response by providing funds for the exercise.
He solicited support of the federal government, non-governmental organizations and people of the affected communities to enable them succeed.
